Crowds pour into the capital to witness Obama’s swearing-in

WASHINGTON — Before daybreak this morning, flag-waving crowds bundled up against the cold began pouring into the National Mall to witness the swearing in of Barack Hussein Obama as the 44th president of the United States.

The press of war and recession aside, the most immediate challenge for the incoming president —and as many as million onlookers —is running the gauntlet of freezing temperatures, a logistics nightmare and a rigid schedule dictated by the Constitution to complete the quadrennial ritual of installing in office the president of the United States.

  1. As a foreigner who wants good things to happen in any and all parts of the world, I wish Americans will work more in harmony with their president. How successful Obama can be as American president will depend on how well his fellow-Americans can rein in their demands for their expectations to be satisfied.
